Study Abroad

Everything South African students need to know about studying internationally — from choosing a country to securing funding and a visa.

Why Study Abroad?

Studying internationally can transform your career prospects and life experience. You gain exposure to world-class research, diverse cultures, and global professional networks that are difficult to access locally.

South African degrees are internationally recognised. Employers worldwide value graduates from institutions like UCT, Wits, and Stellenbosch — but international credentials add a global edge.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply Internationally

1 Research universities and programmes

Use rankings sites like QS World Rankings and Times Higher Education to find universities that offer your desired programme in your target country.

2 Check admission requirements

Most international universities require your NSC results, English proficiency proof (IELTS or TOEFL), a personal statement, and letters of recommendation.

3 Prepare your documents

Certified academic transcripts, a valid passport, proof of English proficiency, personal statement, 2–3 reference letters, and financial proof (bank statements showing you can cover costs).

4 Apply for scholarships early

Apply for scholarships before or at the same time as your university application. Many scholarships close months before the university deadline.

5 Apply for a student visa

Once accepted, apply for a student visa at the relevant embassy. Allow at least 8–12 weeks for visa processing. Requirements vary by country.

6 Arrange accommodation and travel

Apply for on-campus accommodation early — international student housing fills quickly. Book flights in advance for better rates.
